What to watch: Shetland

I’ve written about Shetland–the islands–before, but today I want to tell you about a new show you should watch!

Several years ago I read a series of mysteries by Anne Cleeves that take place in Shetland, and a couple years after that they created a TV series about it.  The show is filmed in Shetland, and there are even some Shetlanders in the show.

So, you can imagine my disappointment when for the past couple years, I wasn’t able to watch it.

SO FRUSTRATING!!!

And then it happened. Netflix picked it up!  WOOT!

I basically spent the last week of my downtime watching Shetland.  It’s quite good.  I love seeing the island and hearing the accents.  Warms my heart (despite the fact the show revolves around murders…).

I highly recommend you watch it.  Let me know what you think (and if you can understand everything they’re saying!).

Bonus: If you haven’t seen Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot and are not super easily offended, I recommend that movie as well.  Now I feel like I need to read the book!

  1. I love Shetland! My local PBS station showed all three seasons a few months ago, and I really enjoyed watching it. (And yes, I could understand everything that everyone said, but there were a couple of spots where I had to rewind and listen a second time. Not often, but sometimes.) I discovered it on Netflix and was really excited, because I messed up recording the first episode and only got the first half. It is no good knowing the murder and never knowing the who-done-it! Plus, now I can watch all that beautiful scenery again.

  2. This sounds like a good show–thanks for the recommendation. I haven’t seen Whiskey Tango Foxtrot yet, but it’s on my list as well. I’ve gotten a kick out of how that phrase has worked its way into the current lexicon. It’s been years since I heard it (regularly) in the military, and now here it is being uttered by my third graders (once, just once). Thanks for a neat slice!

  3. This is why I love Netflix! So many great shows that you’d never normally watch on TV (or at least, I wouldn’t). I’m going to have to take a look at this, especially since I just finished 13 Reasons and am looking for something else intriguing. Thanks for sharing!
