I finished two books this week, both by British authors. I’ll start with the first by SJ Watson, Before I Go to Sleep. This was a pretty easy read, but it took me a while to get into it. I was determined, once again, to finish the dang book. It turned out to be quite good but the end was a little anticlimactic. The premise is that a woman has serious amnesia and can’t remember her life from day to day (Think 50 First Dates but not funny). Throughout the novel she is constructing her past and her present to figure out what really happened and what’s going on now. I thought I had it all figured out; turned out, I didn’t. Haha. It’s worth a read if you can find it for free. I wouldn’t pay for it (or at least not much) so I’m not sure how I got it.
The second, A Dark and Twisted Tide, by Sharon Bolton (Formerly SJ Bolton) is the fourth in her Lacey Flint series. I’ve liked Bolton since her first novel which took place in the Shetland Isles. I liked that one a lot because I could relate to may of the places and the dialects. I enjoy her Flint series, but not as much as her stand alone books. Anyway, this one came out a week or two ago so I snatched it up. It was a quick read, it took me a day and half, that’s with a huge planning session on one of the days. The premise is rather complicated: Lacey is a detective turned “River Cop” on the Thames in London. She, once again, is involved in a serial killing situation. She and the team have to figure out who is wrapping up dead women and weighting them to the bottom of the Thames. While I enjoy these books, it bothers me that Lacey Flint can get into so much trouble. I mean, how does one policewoman make SO many ridiculous/dangerous/stupid decisions? How is she always a target/connection to a killer? It’s a little ridiculous, which is why I prefer her standalone novels. If you haven’t read anything by her, start with Sacrifice, it’s bloody fantastic. 🙂
